Wahoo!!!
One more week until we are done! (If you've been missing out, check out weeks one, two, three, and four.)
A while back in week two I promised I was going to make this Ikea shelving unit look cute:
Now I would love to take all the credit for the idea to turn this shelving unit into a workable piece for a little girls room but the truth is I ripped the entire idea off of fab Interior Designer and blogger Emily Henderson. (Oh Emily, how I love thee!)
Emily was using the shelves in a creative art audio / office space and here is how hers turned out:
If you want to check out Emily's project in it's entirety, check it out here. |
It's a little hard to see in the photos but all she did was paint the fronts of the shelves with pastel colored paint. Sounds so easy and it is. You don't have the commitment of painting the entire piece (really people, who has the time?) but you get some color and fun added to these very simple shelves.
Here we are before:
Lots of pink from all the toys but kinda blah.
I went to the store and picked up a few different colors of craft paint and some sponge brushes and slapped that paint right up there with the toys on the shelf and all.
Oops. |
Double oops. |
Well...slapped the paint on until I realized that I am indeed one of the sloppiest painters on the universe. So I did some damage control and decided to turn this into a two step project and tape off the fronts first.
Here is how she turned out:
It's not really life changing but I think the paint is just the sprucing up this needed. I like the unfinished wood portions showing as I think it adds to the layers of the room. If we had painted the whole thing it would have looked a little too done and predictable.
Also, I tried to arrange the toys on the shelves nicely but didn't really bother with styling it. The point is for the girls to be able to access the toys easily, not for them to have to knock over picture frames to get to a barbie or toy horse.
Next week is the big reveal! Is anyone else nervous!?!
Let's head over to Calling it Home to see how everyone else is doing!
